For me, my favourite icebreaker is "In your opinion, what movie is the greatest of all time and why?" or "What movie are you currently watching?"
I could ask this question about books too, but I've realised that not a lot of people read books in this generation, and even when we do, it's not as many as the number of movies we watch.
And if the person doesn't like movies, that leads to the question, "Why don't you like movies?" and this launches the conversation in as many territories as there are different genres of movies.
In addition, this is a subtle way of using surface questions to realise in depth answers and create bonds that stem from deep conversations.
