It was a good day

A good day? Really? Yes, it was.

Today was a day that seemed to start off terribly, but at the end of the day, I ended up learning a beautiful lesson.

Here’s how my day went.

So I currently work as a recruitment consultant at a company in Lekki.

The many things recruitment involves.

Coming from a distance, another state away, has been quite stressful since I have to resume work at 8 a.m. or 8:30 a.m.

I woke up at 3:30 a.m. after struggling with early awakenings throughout the night. After rushing to get ready, I ran, sweating, to catch the bus by 4:50 a.m.

I got a bus immediately, but at my next bus stop, it seemed like it was about to rain. So, I speed-walked to a bus that charged more than the average or even the usual price. I counted the increased price as due to the coming rain and got in the bus, only to realise after paying that the bus behind ours was going for a lower rate.

The conductor didn’t give back my money, of course, but that was just the beginning of the “woes.” I got to Lekki in heavy rain, only to realise I wasn’t prepared to alight. I searched my handbag for nylon to cover my hair but couldn’t find any.

I stepped out in the rain and hid under the umbrella of a stranger I met until she went her way. I took a different route than I usually do to avoid the flooded roads and got lost in the rain without an umbrella or shade.

The flooded roads I mentioned

I tried walking faster, but I fell, bruised my palm, and began to bleed. I picked myself up, my clothes wet to my underwear, and my bag wet and stained.

This all sounds bad; you’re probably wondering… Where’s the uplifting part?

Like the picture says…

Long story short, I ended up on the exact same road I was trying to avoid and finally had to ask for the help I’d been avoiding asking for.

I got to work and dried myself off in time for a client meeting that, although fun and shiny in the moment, didn’t bring about the results I was hoping it would. That, however, felt like the turning point in my day.

But I ended up having a work day that seemed unproductive, and I felt sick and tired.

After the client meeting in the shiny office.

On my way home, however, I met someone who didn’t have enough cash for transport fare and served as the middleman or woman in this case to ask anyone who had cash in the bus to help. Someone offered to pay for him, and he transferred the money to the person.

That simple act made me feel great. I wasn’t able to offer the person the help he wanted, but because I got involved, I was able to get him the help he needed.

So if I didn’t learn anything else, one thing I did learn was that I don’t always have to be the source of help, but helping someone connect to their helper is also a way of helping.

I won’t forget that.

Helping hands

Back to my weird story, this didn’t mean my day didn’t have any other annoying things. I still stepped on something weird and walked behind a tall, annoying man. However, knowing I was able to help someone today, albeit indirectly, made me smile.

Today was a good day.

P.S. I’ll share one other story like this, maybe in my next post. I wrote that last year.

You can make this promise to yourself too.
